Chimney Inspection: Signs and Methods

A chimney inspection reviews the fireplace, venting arrangement and accessible condition in relation to your concern. We discuss why the review is needed and what can be reached, distinguishing the visual check before basic cleaning from a separately defined inspection with a broader purpose.

Reasons to discuss an inspection scope

  • Smoke behavior or a fireplace odor has changed.
  • An accessible component shows damage or deterioration.
  • Earlier work or an appliance change raises a venting question.
  • Previous findings identify an area needing closer review.

How we approach the inspection discussion

  1. Understand the reason for the review

You explain the change, event or earlier finding. We identify the fireplace or connected appliance before discussing the scope appropriate to that concern.

  2. Review available system information

Construction, accessible components and earlier records help frame the inspection. We distinguish information supplied to us from conditions actually observed at the property.

  3. Define the accessible review

We explain the parts involved and any concealed area. Broader access or an opening is discussed as a specific task rather than assumed to be included.

  4. Examine the agreed areas

The review follows the stated purpose and reach. Accessible deposits, component condition and connection concerns are considered without describing unseen sections as examined.

  5. Share the photographs and findings

We explain the visible observations and proposed next work. Inspection information is kept distinct from the cleaning or repair quote that may follow.

An inspection and a cleaning visit have different purposes

The inspection proposal identifies the review and accessible parts included. Looking at the particular arrangement can help clarify which concern needs attention and which areas require another task. We explain the boundary of the observations alongside the finding.

A separate chimney inspection is quoted separately after we see your system. Basic cleaning is $149 per chimney and starts with a visual review before brush cleaning. Additional access, deposit removal beyond the basic scope and component repairs require separate proposals.

What to have ready at your home

Show us the fireplace and describe when you noticed the concern. Keep earlier reports or appliance information available if they help explain the request. We discuss access before the review, then describe what was observed and what remains outside the agreed inspection.

Inspection-scope questions

Is the visual check before cleaning the same as every formal inspection?

No. Inspection purposes and access differ. We explain the separately proposed review rather than use the accessible cleaning check to describe all possible inspection work.

Does receiving a finding mean the repair has already been approved?

The observation and corrective proposal are separate. We explain the finding and any suggested cleaning, repair or additional review so you can understand the work before agreeing to that next task.
